DuPont Spruance

DuPont’s 500-acre Spruance manufacturing site sits along the James River in Richmond, Virginia. Built on the Ampthill plantation site in 1929 as a Rayon® facility, today Spruance is DuPont’s largest manufacturing site. Spruance employs more than 2,000 people, many of which are second and third-generation employees. It is one of the largest employers in Chesterfield County.

The site produces a wide range of consumer safety and protection products as well as solutions for the military, homeland security and law enforcement, including:

·         Kevlar® – used in body armor, cut-resistant materials and sporting goods;  has helped save the lives of more than 3,000 law enforcement and military personnel

·         Nomex® – used in automotive hoses, electrical insulation and aircraft; most firefighters’ apparel is made with Nomex®

·         Tyvek® – used in protecting homes and buildings from the elements and packaging materials; used in apparel to protect people from a broad array of hazards

·         Zytel® – a nylon resin used in automotive, electronics and consumer applications

Throughout its history Spruance has supported countless non-profit organizations in the Richmond area through charitable giving and employee volunteerism. The site celebrated its 90th birthday in 2019.
